New Issues of La Sentinella Now Online!
CT Digital Newspaper Project is excited to share that we have digitized additional issues of the Italian language newspaper La Sentinella, covering 1931-1948 – which are now online! This completes the full run of this title and now all known issues, covering 1920-1948, are available on Chronicling America. La Sentinella was published weekly and based in Bridgeport, CT, but included news from across the state, all from a viewpoint representative of Italian middle class weekly newspapers of the era. According to Carl A. Antonucci, Jr., Director of Library Services at Central Connecticut State University, La Sentinella “provides excellent coverage of local issues and great insights into the day to day lives of Italian Americans in Connecticut from 1920 – 1948. [It] also reports on the efforts of local Italian Americans to become successful citizens in their new country and to become part of [the] larger Bridgeport, Connecticut community.“
The 1920-1930 issues of La Sentinella were digitized during our previous grant cycle, along with the issues of two other Italian language newspapers, La Tribuna del Connecticut (1906-1908) and L’Indipendente (1907-1936). Like La Sentinella, La Tribuna del Connecticut was a weekly newspaper published in Bridgeport that worked to include statewide coverage, as well as news from New York locales such as Brooklyn and Schenectady. L’Indipendente was published out of New Haven as a weekly newspaper, but did try to move to daily issues for a short time, dubbing itself the “first and only Italian daily in New England.”
The Connecticut State Library press release announcing these new issues, as well as our two new titles – Litchfield County Post and Litchfield Enquirer, can be viewed here.
