The Project
The Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project (CDNP), run out of the Connecticut State Library, is a newspaper digitization project that works as part of the larger Library of Congress National Digital Newspaper Program to digitize historical newspapers for preservation and research use. Each grant allows the Connecticut State Library to add 100,000 pages, digitized from microfilm of newspapers published in Connecticut between 1690-1963, to the Library of Congress Chronicling America database. This national grant project is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and grants are awarded in two-year cycles. The Connecticut State Library has received six NEH grants as part of the National Digital Newspaper Project, and is currently in its sixth grant cycle (2023-2025), with previous grants being awarded in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021. Since 2013, the Connecticut Digital Newspaper Project has digitized almost 500,000 pages of historic Connecticut newspapers, all of which are freely available for use through Chronicling America.
